Victoria Public Transport Fare Guide
A complete overview of ticketing, myki fares, zones, and regional travel across Victoria.
1. The myki Ticketing System
myki is Victoria’s contactless smartcard used for paying fares on trains, trams, and buses across metropolitan Melbourne and regional networks.
- Physical myki: Available as Full Fare ($6 card fee) or Concession / Child ($3 card fee). Available at train stations, myki machines, retail outlets (including 7-Eleven), and online via the Transport Victoria app.
- Mobile myki: Available on compatible Android devices using Google Wallet, allowing users to create a digital myki with no card purchase fee.
- myki Money: Best for occasional travel. Load pay-as-you-go credit onto your card. The system automatically calculates and charges the lowest fare (2-hour or Daily cap) when touching on and off.
- myki Pass: Best for daily commuters. Pre-purchase travel for a fixed duration (7 days or 28 to 365 days) for discounted daily travel rates within selected zones.
2. Zones & Touching On / Off
Public transport across Melbourne operates under a simple zonal pricing structure:
| Zone / Area | Travel Coverage | Touch On / Off Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Free Tram Zone | Melbourne CBD & Docklands | No myki required. Do not touch on or off unless travel continues outside the zone. |
| Zone 1 & Zone 2 | Metropolitan Melbourne | Trains & Buses: Touch on at entry/start, touch off at exit/finish. Trams: Touch on when boarding. Touch off ONLY if traveling entirely within Zone 2. |
3. Regional Travel & Statewide Fare Cap
Regional services are operated primarily by V/Line trains and regional buses.
- Statewide Daily Fare Cap: Daily travel anywhere across Victoria’s public transport network—including long-distance V/Line services—is capped at the same maximum rate as a metropolitan Melbourne daily fare.
- Weekend & Public Holiday Cap: Daily fares are capped at a significantly reduced rate on weekends and Victorian public holidays.
- V/Line Reservations: Commuter V/Line services use myki, but long-distance regional trips (such as to Mildura, Warrnambool, or Albury) require paper tickets or reserved bookings in advance.
4. Concessions & Special Fares
- Children: Children aged 4 and under travel free. Kids aged 5 to 17 travel on a Child/Concession fare.
- Students & Seniors: Victorian Seniors Card, Healthcare, Pensioner, and Victorian Student Card holders are eligible for half-price concession travel.
- Interstate Seniors: Holders of interstate Seniors Cards are entitled to concession fares on all public transport across Victoria.
Tip for Visitors: Download the Transport Victoria app or Google Maps for real-time timetables, trip planning, and instant top-ups for your myki.
